Where Did All The Vikings Go?

This last week I have been thinking about, “Whatever happened to the Vikings?”

I rarely do this, but I had far too much oven baked Camembert, French bread, chocolate and peanuts on Saturday night. I am just recovering…..Yuk. Why? Well, since WWII, once a year, the nations of Europe get together for a song contest. No it’s true! You see, after what has been estimated by some to be over 100 million war dead on that continent in the 20th century, such a competition was sought to prosper understanding and acceptance of national differences and singing together beats killing each other for sure. For me, despites its plastic facade, it's a bigger spectacle than the Olympics, European cup and FA cup finals all rolled into one, after all, when you can't polish a turd the best thing to do is roll it in glitter! And let me tell you, you have never seen so much glitter gazed at by around 125 million people. I laugh out load for nearly 4 hours.

For those who see past the singing and dancing (and it’s not hard by the way) and see all the real political and social interplay portrayed there; while the spectacle reflects the ignorance of the European media spoon fed young, ( e.g. Russia had a great song about peace and being ‘at one’ whilst they send missiles to Syria) the whole ‘set piece’ of the programming publicly pushes all the driving forces of current popular culture down the watchers and the listeners throats! This weekend, a smorgasbord of current culture was portrayed in Switzerland for this year’s 2013 Eurovision. So, while in the UK our host over the last few years has been a gay man anyways, on this year’s presentation we had we had a public display of woman on woman kissing, man on man kissing, and at the very front, gazing adoringly on to the main stage, well, it was like a rabid ‘mosh pit’ scene from the gay proms. ‘Dancing queens’ indeed.

Comedienne Petra Mede, in my opinion, did an awful performance job in the interlude whilst the votes were being counted, yet her song, which tried to convey her own countries culture and that of Europe's was very illuminating when she sang....

Dear hearts, Petra’s singing observation that “In all of our cities the men have no titties but they still say at home to raise the kids’ is a line you are not so easily going to forget! it might be both an observation and even an affirmation of this western role reversal but like it or not, it is killing our societies and leaving many young men adrift in a feminised society that offers them no hope.

Whilst on this very day in the UK parliament, when the government once more tries to pass an unpopular bill on ‘gay marriage’, and the Church of Scotland debates on whether or not to allow openly and active gay men to be ministers, I note that they are simply following the lead of some of the main ‘evangelical lights’ who have already designed their own wedding ceremony for the sanctifying of sodomites in marriage. This would be bad enough it were not for the fact that the majority of Evangelicals have already quietly re-interpreted Biblical gender leadership roles under the banner of a ‘spiritually politically correct but most corrupt ‘Culturally relevant-Kingdom’ theology. Evangelical leaders and the rest of our men must now own the mess they continue to propagate and in the owning, repent and change. Is this a legitimate charge I this morning lay at the feet of me brethren. I believe it is.

Friends, after 2,000 years of Christianity on the European and American continent, the problems exhibited among our societies right now are down to us. I tell you right now, it is the church who are to blame for this state of family deconstruction, and societal collapse. You see, if we truly are the revolving hub around which the universe so presently rotates, then we have so obviously compromised the male gender leadership message of the Bible, that it is evident that the spokes are now breaking off that increasingly faster rotating wheel of time, and ‘soon and very soon’ we just might crash into an ever widening truly misogynistic Islamic ditch. Watch now. Keep watching.

As for the 66 Books Ministry, well, the Gospel message to our cities is the same it has always been you know… "Repent and believe the Gospel" ….… and should REAL revival come through the preaching of the Word, should there indeed be a 'fresh outpouring' from God Most High, the evidence will not be seen inside the four walls of some sad shed in Wales or even in the plush suites of Pensacola beach, no, real revival shall be evidenced in such a cultural role reversal, such an upsurge of Biblical order, that it will be revolutionary in content and destructive in design! Listen up now, “In a POST CHRISTIAN or PRECHRISTIAN environment real revival has always been marked by trouble.” I ask you then today, whilst respectable Evangelicals are after quietness and peace, I wonder if God's after causing some 'trouble'? And if so, are we evangelicals really ready for this and up for it? I think the answer is a double no. I think all we are up for is a greasy breakfast once a month, a couple of quiet beers and a few farts around the fire. You know folks, I am increasingly wondering if full Gospel Biblical Preaching will ever come out of what’s left of the church in Europe? I am asking myself the question; “Do we have any men left in our churches who are the instigators of such holy trouble?” No. I am not sure we do. Indeed, I wonder if the Vikings have long since left the building.

UK Evangelist Goes Global With His 66 Books Ministry & 66 City Project

ELLIJAY, GEORGIA (ANS) -- Reverend Victor Robert Farrell, who in 2011 successfully preached from the 66 books of the bible in the UK’s 66 cities over 66 days, is now making the project global.

good news of Jesus from each of the 66 books of the Bible in the 66 most influential cities of each of the world’s 250 nations.

"Over the next 25 years, 16,500 cities of the world would be receiving a prayer packed and solid Biblical message regarding Jesus, the Saviour of the world, from the whole Bible, because He is wonderful!" said Rev. Farrell.

The main administrative and prayer hub for this new global endeavour is taking shape and root in Ellijay, a spiritually thriving and open hearted community set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia.

Rev Farrell explains: "We had church planted in South Florida some years ago now, and some of our friends from there had recently relocated to Ellijay. Once they shared the 66 City project with their friends in Ellijay, who in turn also found out we were planning a 2015 USA mission, we found they were very eager to get involved in this mission.

“In a short period of time, we had cast some vision and found that these good folks had taken both it and us to their hearts. Frankly, the feeling was mutual and the rest is history. We are thrilled to see The 66 Books Ministry establish its global hub in Ellijay amongst such internationally minded and big hearted excited folks."

One of those in this community who was inspired by the Rev Farrell’s vision was Nurse Assistant Kelli Paslawski:

Magnificent Mondays | Strange Connections

This last week I have been thinking about ‘maintenance issues, strange connections and marriages made in heaven’ ….

So anyway……. despite a delay in takeoff, we arrived in Georgia safely. The aircraft we were supposed to have travelled on had ‘maintenance issues’ and so was swapped out for an older model. It had been thirty years since our first trip the USA and if it wasn’t for the lack of an outside toilet, I am pretty sure that the aircraft we flew on this time was the exact same one we flew on thirty years ago. Anyways, it got us there safely.

It’s been phenomenal to be out of England and be warm again. For my good friends still trapped under the gun metal grey of constant cloud filled skies, I need to tell you that elsewhere, the sun is still shining and the sky is still blue and who knows, maybe this year, we shall get a real summer. (With the forecasts of drought and hose pipe bans already in the news in Britain, it looks exceedingly possible!)

We had our first board meeting last night, ratifying and approving our fixed foundational documents. It was just super. The funny thing was, it was obvious that all of the board had some ‘maintenance’ issues and yet despite all that, here we were. As I sat there enjoying wonderful food and fellowship it made me giggle how God could hook up a messianic Jew, a former US army service man from Georgia, a mad woman from Montana (no offence Gail J ) and a Mexican born Latino lady from Denver, with a pasty little Englishman like me. (Well, little that is, apart from beef filled belly.)

On the surface, of course, these are seemingly strange connections of people all of which have been drawn together by God for a purpose which lays way beyond them, and may I say, ‘that’ is the ribbon that binds us all together: The purposes of God that lie way beyond ourselves.

The more I begin to get to know these folks, it is obvious that they have walking with God in the high places of faith and just to confound us all, these high places of faith are only ever found in the deep and often darkest valleys of our journey. Thus, from the darkness they have gained a sight which allows them to see way beyond the present with an over the horizon radar, that tracks with hope the blips of God blessing zooming along in the unseen distance. This, I think, when coupled with nobodies coming out of nowhere, is maybe a mark of the true prophetic? In any event, God uses seeming nobodies. At the 66 Books Ministry, we really believe this, but the truth of the matter, however, is that all the world’s and even the church’s nobodies are in fact God’s somebody’s. They are people who can live for the purposes of God which lay way beyond them. There is no pretension here and it is very good to be around such folk.

So how can I close this week’s ‘Magnificent Monday’ letter to you all. Well, let’s give a fisherman the last word today:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith — the salvation of your souls. Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven — things which angels desire to look into. (1 Peter 3:2-12)

It’s good to be around people that live for a Divine purpose which is way beyond themselves.

This last week I have been thinking about Truth Revived & Truth Remaining.

It was several years ago now when I first commented on the rise of the Pulpit Monkey. On first publication it was deemed to be offensive. Now however, the article appears to be having a bit of a revival. Maybe what was true some time ago, is now, out of experience, validated to have been so.

1 Corinthians 1:21-24 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Of Preaching & Pulpit Monkeys

I am what was once referred to as a ‘literate.’ That is, I am an ordained person not bearing a University degree. I would like a degree, a couple maybe, but ah, no matter, I must confess, I do love being a “literate”! T’is enough for me.

I regard myself as someone rooted in literacy, in all kinds of words and in ‘The Word’ in particular and I am daft enough to believe, that even in this post modern age, even in what some have referred to as a visualized post Evangelical age, that the proclamation of the Word of God still stands tallest as the primary means of communicating the Gospel. I believe in the verbal proclamation of the Gospel, one voice to another’s ears; one soul speaking through the connected eyes of another, from his heart to their heart. I believe this is God’s chosen way of communicating the Gospel and though it might be foolishness, it works.

The only reason it has not ‘seemingly’ been working and the main reason we have then replaced it most thoroughly with anaemic video clips, cosseted in the pale blanket of wet worship, is that we have hired ourselves a multitude of pulpit monkeys, who, void of any anointing, never the less bear a reputable degree, manage well and communicate inoffensively better. For sure, such monkeys are cute to have around at first, performing great tricks even, but in the end, who wants to listen to a pulpit monkey chattering on about nothing? The soul turns sour and dies under the pathetic ministry of such chattering chimpanzees. Yes, I wish with all my heart that we had men in our pulpits instead of monkeys, for what we have now is just not enough.

In his book, ‘Lectures to My Students’, when talking about ‘God’s Acres,’ those open air arenas of proclamation and the great men of the past who made them their pulpits, Spurgeon makes mention of the Scots divine, Holy George Wishart. It is Wishart’s disciple, John Knox, who tells us that being denied access to most churches, that Wishart ‘preached the length and breadth of Scotland in the open air.’ Indeed, on one occasion he went to the plague city of Dundee, choosing his platform of proclamation to be the entrance of the east gate, where taking Psalm 107:20 as his text, he preached to the infected outside the city gate and the Black Death free within. Spurgeon says “Seldom has a preacher had such an audience and seldom an audience had such a preacher......Old time stood at the preachers side with a scythe, saying with a hoarse voice, ‘work while it is today for at night I will mow thee down.’ There, too, stood grim death hard by the pulpit, with his sharp arrows saying, ‘Do thou shoot God’s arrows and I will shoot mine.’ This is indeed,” says Spurgeon, “a notable instance of preaching out of doors.” You’d better believe it!

Wishart escaped an assassination attempt at Dundee, but his old enemy Cardinal Beaton had Wishart handed over to him by the Earl of Bothwell. Wishart was tried as an heretic, convicted and burned at the stake outside the walls of Edinburgh castle. On the morning of his execution the Captain of the castle invited Wishart to breakfast and gave him both food and gunpowder bags to put under his clothing. At the burning, his executioner knelt and begged for Wishart’s forgiveness, which he most readily gave. The fire did indeed eventually explode the gunpowder bags but they didn’t kill him straight away. From his window, Cardinal Beaton watched Wishart’s dying agonies……………….

Yes, you can buy yourself a pulpit monkey anytime you like. Ah, but men who carry the gunpowder of the Holy Spirit, underneath their anointed and holy garments, men that pack power in their words, and shoot arrows from their mouth, men who stand with time and death by their sides, men who truly believe and practice the foolishness of preaching, my God, men like that are worth their weight in gold! However, they cannot be bought. Think about that.

Some of you today are called to set your pulpits in the open air once more. Make sure your a literate in the Word, make sure your packed with the gunpowder of the Holy Spirit.

Some of you today need to stop monkeying around and repent. Yes, some of you, for goodness sake, need to start being men in your pulpits and not monkeys.

Some of you Church goers today need to check your larders and I tell you, if all you have accumulated over the years are bunches of bright yellow bananas, then some of you need to simply stop going to the local zoo, because I tell you, that’s what your local church has turned into.

Pray:- Oh God that we would have some mighty men to worry us once more! Take us back to Your word, put Your bow in our mouth and Your fire in our hearts. Pack us O God with the explosive and resurrection power of Jesus Christ the King. Please God give us words and voices once more, instead of this endless chatter of chinless chimps, those tepid pulpit monkeys, in Jesus name we ask it, amen and amen.

I have been thinking this last week about Prometheus & Being arrested

Yes I did watch the film and No! It’s not happened yet, but I have now been threatened with being reported to the Police now about three times in the last three years. Interestingly, I find on-line Americans just threaten to kill me, (you know where you stand) but my fellow Brits, well, being a little nicer, they just say they will call the police. On one memorable occasion last year, after preaching on the street in Swansea, I remember turning a tall and smiling Welsh ‘Copper’ away when he realised I was just a little preacher telling people about Jesus. “Well,” he said, “Just be sure you don’t offend anybody boyo”. Mind you, I was painted white and dressed as death at the time and carrying a six foot plastic hatchet; but that’s another story for another day. On that occasion, however, I am confident that it was Christians who called the police. No really. It’s true. Now then, this last threat of someone ‘calling the Police’ on me, came out of last week’s Magnificent Mondays news letter. The threat was from a fellow Christian minister, (I must have picked up his churches public email when I was preaching the Word of God in his city) and he responded to the emailed newsletter by dropping me a nice little note which said:

“ ……I don't agree with any of your ridiculous views and your legalism and deception. You are behaving abusively. I am going to report you to the police if I receive any more emails from you.”

So there you go, I am apparently abusive, deceptive, legalistic and ridiculous and if I don’t stop being so, the poor sweet child will go and call the police. Man! Religious people get riled up over emails don’t they? And all that talk about turning cheeks and washing feet as well…..makes you think. As for me, well, I mostly use the delete button.

Now, all our Magnificent Monday Newsletters are published on line as well sent out via email and you can check them out at The66BooksTrust.com and see that there is a history of writing available there for everyone to see, indeed, there is more than enough to get me hung out to dry that’s for sure, but I don’t mind that, no, I really don’t. What I mean is, if the world or the devil cares to take a pot shot at little old me, then I am not surprised, though presently I am obviously not much of a threat to him, (may God help me be the more so,) but like I say, I won’t mind really. I mean, all’s fair in war and I certainly intend to take no prisoners. However, when fellow ministers and other Christians threaten to go to the Police over proclamation, verbal or written, then oh my friends, we have arrived in some dangerous times again and I wonder now that as Jesus once more begins to pull down the religious temples made with mans own hands, then there shall be, I fear, more religious betrayal to come and maybe even more than has occurred in the past.

We are, I think, way past the tipping point in the United Kingdom and before the Revolution comes, that ‘Back to the Bible’ revolution I keep banging on about, and please God it will, it seems we are now stood at the head of a valley called ‘The Beginning of Sorrows’ and before our descent into it, the King of this same Valley has nailed a large sign to a tree for all His friends to see, and it reads “watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.”

The context of this ‘Valley of Sorrows Sign’, taken from Mark 13, is of course religious Israel and maybe ‘the time of the end’, but even so, history has shown us that the tenor of the passage itself can apply to various ages in church history and in the so doing amply indicates the inclinations of the religious portrayed therein, which, by the way, have always proved to be a true testimony of contempt, derision and death to those who proclaim the raw Word in real ways. Now listen dear hearts, this really isn’t a case of “Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me” but it is a case of highlighting that the last battle shall be over words and the Word in particular. It started that way, do you remember, “Did God say…?” I am sure it will finish that way.

Last week I spoke about ‘The Old Battling ground and the muzzling of the Lion’, declaring that the very proclamation of wholesome Biblical messages will be seen as disrespectful, destructive and extremist, and such extremism will be bundled with the murderers and the terrorists, and treated just the same. I think I was right. The true prophetic has been almost silenced in our land and those who dare to speak against Laodicea might just have those girlie little townsmen call the ‘Rozzers’ on ‘em. Listen, I am telling you now, Babylon, that great whore of old, which even now is spreading her legs across the back of the unsaddled and many headed beast, does not like having her scarlet skirts lifted up in church so that true saints of God can see the ugliness of her nakedness and flee! No, she hates it and is out to silence those who with words shall reveal her pox ridden thighs. Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.

(Oh and by the way, if in the future, I do ever get banged up for speaking up, then do send me a cake will you, and while your at it, go stick a Bible in it as well, ‘cause I am not sure if such a sharp knife will soon be allowed to be carried or spoken about in public! Think On!

The Problem of Promethius and The Preparation For Death

Pastors who imitate the preaching and the moral action of the prophets without also imitating the prophets’ deep praying and worship so evident in the Psalms are an embarrassment to the faith and an encumbrance to the church. (Eugene Peterson – Working The Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Integrity)

I neither want to be an embarrassment nor an encumbrance, but I am afraid, that my natural tendency is to be so, for I have seen what Promethean fire and its resultant adrenalin-led activity can do in raising the dancing blue flames of man-made hope, both seen flickering and realised in books like “Your best life now”. Yes, I’ve seen what those flames of soulish prophetic doing can achieve, what they can get done and boy do we need to get things done! For when I look around, oh friends, when I look around, there is so much to be done, and frankly so much that we can do now and yet there is oh so very little time to do it in.

You know, the needs of the world and the church are so great and our ability to meet those needs are now so possible, that I just want to get on down and go buy that excavator, yeah! Stoke that fire and lay hold of that yellow hot, JCB, earth-moving machine and flip that mountain on its back; build that tunnel, ford that stream, make a way through that mighty river, ‘cause I’ve got, “high in the sky, apple pie.... hopes” that we can move that rubber tree plant! Yes sirree, move it wherever we so well please. We can do it! Let’s shake that thing, yes, let’s shape this thing called our destinies, this thing called our possibilities, yes, let’s get up, let’s get down, let’s get on with it and let’s just do it baby, ‘cause we are preparing people for life! Preparing people for change, preparing people to better themselves, to better society and to better the nations of the world! Hallelujah and chaaaaaaaaarge! Have you not heard? “We can do it!”

Peterson (in the book I mentioned previously) points out how the present generation of church (I believe the Laodicean Church) has bought into the Promethean myth in such a way that “We have let ourselves be co-opted in the struggle against limits, committed to raising the standard of living: bigger machines, cheaper chicken...uncritically using the means offered by the world...so uncritically applauded and so readily at hand.......we have joined in the struggle to make life better for everyone with any available means.....the problem is that Prometheus does not pray, there is too much to do and there is little time to do it.”

Do remember that in the legend, Promethius redeemed humanity from the tyranny of mortality, by causing mortals to cease foreseeing their personal doom, by placing in them blind hopes and lastly, by stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humanity for their pleasure, for their profit and for their continual and technological advancement.

Peterson is right in his statement about proclaiming prophets and their lack of prayer, for if there are two things that characterises both the present pastorate and the postmodern and in some cases post-Christian community of the saints, it is first, a distinct lack of prayer and secondly, a lack of preparation for a good death. In less than a century, over 7 billion people will die on this planet. Surely this is something we should prepare for and in the so doing, that preparation for death should turn our so short lives into journeys that are baptised in the warm and wet, ever running river of prayer? This is not miserable thinking but it is Biblical thinking! There is so much to do and so little time to do it in that we really must pray and that much, much more. Yet the doing, yes, all the blind man made doing, has squeezed out all our praying.

Tell me, do you have a Promethean fire in your own personal boiler tonight? After all, just where are you getting your central heating from? What is raising the power of your personal steam, your church’s steam, your mission’s steam? Have you numbered your days? Have you and do you consider your mortality and is your life, lived in its ever lengthening shadow? If you find the thought of that last question maybe to be defeatist, or even repugnant, then I can virtually guarantee pastor, brother, sister, friend and mate, that you’ve got some strange Promethean fire in your boiler, and I tell you, it needs putting out! For if you don’t put it out, it sure as hell will burn you out! Mark my words here. Mark my words.

Yes the two best things and most Biblical things you can do is pray and prepare for your ultimate demise. Think about that today.

Pray:- Lord teach me to pray. Lord teach me to number my days. For Lord, I love this strange Promethean power. I just love it Lord! You know that I do not wish to be a Luddite Lord, but I do ask You to put the false fire out and then my Lord, send the Holy fire from Your throne, in Jesus name I ask it, amen.

Hello there, its Monday Aug 27^th and here in London the Paralympics are about to begin. I love that commercial which says “Get ready for the Super-humans!” Life is full of challenges but most assuredly the human ‘spirit’ is a power thing.

We are getting over the hot spell now which means we can keep the windows closed. I forgot we live in London and so going to bed and ‘accidentally’ leaving the downstairs window open we got burgled. I never heard a thing. The Police found no prints and only a poor footprint on my desk next to the window. This burglars was an Apple Geek, because all he took was my iPad, my wife’s iPhone and some cash. He left my laptop on the floor (thank you Jesus!) all of our bank cards and various other computer periphanalia. Already a real good friend has given us the money that was lost and also their old iPad 1. Again, I am SO thankful as it means I can continue on monitoring our new APPS. So much to do there still!

Meanwhile, this week I have been thinking that our son is 30 years of age this month. Also, this year, our daughter is 33. I was present at both of their births and regarding physical pain, no thanks to modern medicine, I never felt a thing. However, as all fathers will testify, the pain comes later and often, keeps on coming. This is but one challenge in all our little lives.

I remember that there was no Caesarean breaking in regarding their birth, no, they both broke out of the womb. Broke out of an extended gestation period, (though our daughter was on time) where they both seemingly crawled out of their mothers expanded uterus reaching down the birth canal and from the bloody waters were found shouldering their way out into the uncommon air, arriving as a screaming and red faced mass, bursting out into the waiting world. These composite creatures of me, my wife, and the hand of God, now faced all their choiced destiny which lay before them on their journey back to decomposition, where eventually, after short time really, their bodies, along with all of ours shall make become elements of the earth once more whilst their spirits return to Him who gave them. This is the challenge of all our little lives.

Yes, I remember when my wife’s waters broke out of her, that great flooding precursor to the oncoming tide of the trouble we call life. I remember the screaming birth, the terrible twos, the titanic teenage times and in observing them both through the following years, I have witnessed them continue to break out and break through their life’s obstacles, that same very life which now, in the great scheme of things, is approaching somewhere near their own half way point. Yes, I have seen them break out of a number of confining situation, even from many an enclosure, chosen or put upon them, and in this, like us all, they have continually birthed their way through. This is the continuing challenge of all our little lives.

My own breakout of the womb was apparently assisted. Fearful that my mother would lose her life, a specialist doctor in a white coat was called in, who, apparently nonchalantly swinging his stethoscope in his right hand whilst whistling down the midnight corridors, sauntered into the birthing ward (the same hospital our son was born in by the way) and, according to my own tall taled father, using a suction machine, pulled me head first out of the womb. My dad, a Glaswegian rascal, used to enjoy telling me that when he first saw me, I had ‘a head like a coconut’, all elongated at one end. I am sure this still accounts for many a misaligned facial feature and strange bump on my head. Some would say, it may account for a whole lot more. No comment. My point is, and I am getting to it, is that I needed someone to help me breakout. ‘The breaker’ needed to come up and help me.

There is a time in many situations in life, usually when a fullness has come, where there is a natural bursting, a natural overflowing, and a natural breaking forth. Often times though, and especially when the devil restricts our expansion, when the devil blocks us in, pins us down, cuts us off, that finding ourselves in such restrictive situations, we cannot break out at all and in the confines of these sad scenarios there is such a restriction that it leads to either a deathly disappointing frustration or a famine which will kill us! At times like this, WE NEED THE BREAKER TO COME UP.

THIS, by the way, is another name of our Jesus. ‘THE BREAKER’

Tell me, what situation are you dying in? What constriction is strangling your expansion? What burdensome yoke is chaffing your tired neck, bowing your bent shoulders further still? What lies? What misunderstandings? What little hearts? What mad and bad people? What wicked warder? What paucity of promise? What all red bank account? What poverty? What diminishment? What broken road obstacle and what deep gloom of all your sinking seas have brought you to your pleading knees today? Whatever it is, I tell you, NO MATTER WHAT THE PROBLEM, IF, CHRIST THE BREAKER turns up to make a way, then a way shall be made, and it shall be a way to glory and fruitfulness.

I need.

You need.

We all need, sometimes, CHRIST THE BREAKER to come and make a way.

Think on.

Hello there, its Monday July 30^th here in London and it’s not raining.

I was thinking this last week about Bits of God and the Gay Gordon’s coming to life in Scotland | It’s been quite a week.

Now as the thought Police patrol Twitter Avenue, Face Book Close and Blogger hill, it has to be acknowledged that free speech has gone and Biblical speech makes as much nose as a wee mouse on a carpet stair, wearing slippers.

So Scotland will legalize gay marriage. In this respect they have gotten ahead of the game and the United Kingdom’s intention to legalize gay marriage by 2015. The Church of Scotland is, of course, up in arms. “The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in May 2011 affirmed that while it supports the traditional definition of marriage, it still views homophobia as sinful and urges ministries to defend all members of the church, regardless of their sexual orientation.” Well no, that’s not really up in arms is it? No, that’s simply gross complicity, and as a man who is prideophobic, murderaphobic, idolatraphobic and homophobic to name but a few of my sinaphobic tendencies in Jesus, I find myself at odds with the CoS, the Anglicans and many other heretics. (Did you hear the pin from the word grenade tinkle across the concrete there…) Word’s, you see, my goodness, they will get you into trouble. Especially right words in a Godless generation, and that, is what we are.

Now I have to say, I did enjoy the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games. It was really quite mad, but full of imagery and especially the imagery of words. Despite NBC (and no one knows why yet) refusing to air the dance sequence which accompanied abide with me, it remained for me, one of the most powerful pieces I have seen in a long time. The Words of course, sung mostly ignorantly at each cup final now, are a Christian prayer to God, acknowledging our need and dependence upon him and so, yes, so much more. Like most old hymns, they are soaked in the heady white rum of Biblical Theology. So, Boyle, scantily contrasting the time-lined theme of the evolution of British culture, revealed that though we are in a state of present bonkers-ness, each of our four nations in word and song were seen to be rooted in Biblical Christianity. As one journalist put it, Danny Boyle showed that ‘pieces of God were lying all over Britain.’

I can hardly move this morning, having spent the last two days on a ‘full on’ boxing course. That’s right, fat boy here has taken up coaching again at the Waltham Forest ABC in East London, and this weekend I was speaking to another coach who runs a club less than a mile from me, who tries to help gang members. His stories were scary, as are the ever present knife toting ‘Gangs of East London.’ “They will kill you in a heart-beat”. Life is cheap. Murder is badge of honour.

Heretical and dying church institutions cannot put together the broken pieces of God lay strewn over Britain and friends, neither would they want to re-assemble such a self condemning picture. No, the doormat presentation of the unconditional love of the Muppet God still allows their sin to continue unabated and our nation to solidify the ‘O,O,O’ of a ZERO Generation. In other words, a generation with Zero knowledge of the God of the Bible. It is here right now.

One Foot In The Grave

The South of France has always been a place for British ‘Ex Pats,’ seeking solace in the sun. It was a few years ago when I flew into Nice on that same Cote D’Azur and it is here in this 2000 year old French city, that the Anglican church there has one of its most famous of European churches. For me the beauties of ‘Holy Trinity’ lies not in its Neo-Gothic majesty or in its rich stained glass, lit majestically above the high altar warmed by the afternoon sun, but rather it is outside, in the green graveyard where lies the mortal remains of a famous Scottish Poet. Today in 1847, the Revd. Henry Francis Lyte died of tuberculosis and was buried in the cemetery of Holy Trinity, Nice.

Since 1927, along with the British National anthem, millions of cheering fans at each and every Football Association Cup Final have sung Lyte’s most famous of poems. How wonderful is that! Indeed, it is even more wonderful when you understand the life that this man led, for it was indeed a life ever and always lived with one foot in the grave.

Evelyne Millar writes of the second son of Captain Tomas Lyte of the Royal Marines. Henry, born in Scotland, together with his mother and two siblings, followed his father to Ireland. Captain Lyte had been sent there to help put down the 1798 Irish rebellion. Shortly after this, his father deserted the family taking with him Henry’s older brother, whilst his mother returned to England with his other brother. There they died and Henry aged nine years of age was left in Ireland, alone and destitute.

It was the headmaster of his school, Revd. Dr Robert Burrows, who took pity on young Henry, taking him in and caring for him even to the point of paying for his education. Henry, whilst at trinity College Dublin, was awarded the Chancellor's Prize for English Verse for three successive years!

Henry was ordained into the ministry and worked so fervently at his parochial duties and writing that he wore himself out and contracted a lung disease that would bother him the rest of his life. Indeed, it was his doctor that told him, that if he did not seek easier and warmer climates, he would die. Throughout his life he would spend long and torturous absences from his duties and family, whilst recovering from these recurring bouts of debilitating illness.

Henry’s final Parish was Brixham on the South Coast of England where he served the last twenty- three years of his life, living always with one foot in the grave. Ministering to the sailors of his parish he wrote them hymn books, prayers to be said whilst at sea and of course, sea chanties!

It was just three weeks before his death that he penned his most famous of poems and he sent the finished manuscript to his wife, from Avignon in France. It seemed he knew it was very unlikely that he would ever return home. The poem was first sung at his memorial service, which was held at his home parish in Brixham and from the lips of a man who spent all his life with one foot in the grave, we have left for us one of the most immortal and moving of prayers and lifes observances which ever flowed from the pen and heart of man in love with God, despite the sorrows of his life.

Hello there, it’s Monday July 16^th here in London and its already getting darker on the mornings.

This last week I was thinking about | “Painting myself into a Corner”

It’s not easy speaking out what is on your heart?

Some of you might not believe this, but, I have been especially restrained in my observations. Even so, some people have most definitely classed me as an extremist. Aren’t words powerful? Interesting? Damning?

The truth is that I want to be a real extremist, after all, our crucified Saviour is surely the most extreme of all extremists? “Cut your eye out, chop your hand off, keep out of hell fire, leave your mother and father, hate your children, you white washed walls, you brood of vipers and all the while turning over tables, with a whip and the flapping of Middle Eastern flip flops!” I mean c’mon….that’s all pretty extreme! However, I do not have the guts to be so. After all, it’s all very costly. They killed him in the end.

I want to be a revolutionary, but revolutions are expensive. Ask our Govt, who seem to have their hand in not a few Arab springs. (Why is that by the way? Oil?) In addition to that, revolutionaries get killed, they get locked up, and the ruling classes call revolutionaries terrorists. I mean take a look at that meat hook hanging Pastor, ‘Bomber Bonhoeffer’, he’s a good example. Be careful who you quote my boys, be careful who you quote.

The extreme revolutionary might be the Biblical model (and I think it is), however, at best, we the church are making mild nice and men’s law abiding people. In the whole of recorded of human history, in times of peace, never mind and time of war, mild and nice never did it, and you know, it never will. We sometimes refer to the great CT Studd and the like as models of Christian manliness, but there’s not any like them today. No, not one. Look

As a young man he staked his career, in China he staked his fortune, now he staked his life. His answer to the Committee was; "Gentlemen, God has called me to go, and I will go. I will blaze the trail, though my grave may only become a stepping stone that younger men may follow." Leaving his wife and four daughters in England, C.T. sailed, contrary to medical advice, for the heart of Africa in 1910, where he continued to work until his death in 1931. C.T. bore much fruit for the Saviour while in Africa as he endured weakness and sickness; loosing most of his teeth and suffering several heart attacks; but he endured hardness as a good soldier of the Lord Jesus Christ! In a letter home, C.T. gave a last backward look at the outstanding events of his life:

"As I believe I am now nearing my departure from this world, I have but a few things to rejoice in; they are these:
- 1. That God called me to China and I went in spite of utmost opposition from all my loved ones.
- 2. That I joyfully acted as Christ told that rich young man to act.
- 3. That I deliberately at the call of God, when alone on the Bibby liner in 1910, gave up my life for this work, which was to be henceforth not for the Sudan only, but for the whole unevangelized World.
My only joys therefore are that when God has given me a work to do, I have not refused it."

I wonder if God stopped giving out such work to Englishmen a long time ago? Or maybe we just told Him to go and ‘stick it’?

It makes you think doesn’t it? It makes me think. I have observed for all of us, that the Shepherd of the sheep, will have his time alone with all of us.

This last week I was thinking about | “Smelling The Cordite”

Imagine a bomb going off in slow motion. Got it?

Well, the demographic time bomb exploded sometime ago now you know, yes, the dirty anti-god plutonium bomb blew its lid off in the 1960’s. Since then, the shrapnel has slowly whizzed down the decades destroying the church in its tracks, stupefying its ears in a tepid tinnitus buzzing, producing an un-concerning deafness and blinding its eyes in gormless, sunshine and hand raised delight. Yet, despite our prophetic protestations to the contrary, (those silly hounds, those lying dogs) we are dying, and WE ARE dying because we are being judged by Jesus, and our lukewarm tepidity is making Him ‘sick us up’ like some great lion convulsing up a giant fur ball. While there is no repentance or call for it in our own house, then we have no grounds to call for it in a strangers’.

Yes, I thought I would start us on a cheery note this morning.

If my observations are correct, (and they are) then the real church needs to prepare for a very different world. A world where the Laodicean lot will denounce the real preachers of the real Gospel; a world of increasing civil-war strife within the established churches, a world of substantially decreased revenue, a world of much, much fewer, but much, much larger churches where the staple diet of the day will be smiles and soporific lies on toast.
If my observations are correct, (and they are ) then the real church needs to prepare for a very different world. A world, where the church shall have no children.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then the real church needs to prepare for a very different world. A world where judgement will be banned, be decried and defined as the main sin of our age. “How very dare you judge me?”
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then the real church needs to prepare for a very different world. A world of sham embarrassment, where Christians who stand, shall stand in the dock, alone.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then the real church needs to prepare for a very different world. A world of advancing and overtaking Islam.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then the real church needs to prepare for a very different world. A world, where secular humanism shall mock the socks off the remnant.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then we shall have war.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then we shall have unmet need.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then we shall have a famine of a living voiced word.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then YOU need to be prepared for the time to come.
If my observations are correct, (and they are) then it’s time for some you, to begin to smell the cordite. It’s time for you to get to praying and planning, for you are about to enter a very different world.

Hello there, it’s Monday July 2^nd and what a beautiful morning here in London

This last week I was thinking about | Getting to grips with the Bible

Did I tell you we were launching a new church in September? | Yup, that’s right. you can check out the vision at http://www.c66.tv and while you are there, do give is a ‘LIKE’ that’s not a lick but a LIKE. It gives the impression we have loads of people coming instead of just me Bridget and the cat. (useless cat as well!) anyways, meantime, we are still, in the mornings looking for a place to go and get some good grub.

Appearances are deceiving. So, on Saturday we were walking up in Chingford (North) and enjoying the fete, when we walked past again, a broken down and unkempt Baptist church building. It was the last triangular cut cucumber Sandwich left on the plate, a but curled up on the edges and dry on top, but who knows, with a hot cup of tea it may be palatable for the hungry man.

So we turned up for the advertised hour long service. Mission praise and Doris. “Here we go again. I said.” and Bridget says, “Do you think they are strict and peculiar Baptists” I says, “Well, they are particularly peculiar that’s for sure.” She didn’t smile. At times my sharp wit and humour is utterly wasted on Bridget. A dozen people at 10:59 and by 11:00, what with the dark suited preacher coming out of the back with his band of prayers and late shuffle at the door, about two dozen of us rose to sing the first of the old hymn sandwich. I looked down at Hymn No3 “How sweet and awful is the place”…God was having a laugh.

“Oh to see the Dawn of Darkest Day” Kicked us off, followed by “What a friend we have in Jesus’’, “How sweet and awful is the place” and “When peace like a river”. Loved the lot. Just a piano and voices, meaty words, prayerful words, loved the lot. Then the pianist got up, read Philemon and preached. I tell you it was one of the best messages I have ever heard on Philemon. It just so happens that the preaching pianist was an American from Arkansas called Barry King. I know. Go figure!

You see, that very morning the building had just re-opened and there was a new church planting team in there linked to the Grace Baptist Partnership. Brilliant. We have found a place to go on Sunday Mornings before we kick of C66. Out of all the places I have visited over the last three years, (no offence to anyone here at all) it was in a scabby Baptist church restart in Chingford where I got my first great meal. I felt like the festering food critique in Ratatouille. Delighted, surprised and coming back again.

It was after the service and quite literally over a cucumber Sandwich, that I spoke with a young Essex man called Ricky (of course) who impressed me with one thing….His getting to grips with the Scriptures. Just brilliant. So anyways, I dedicate ‘Diggers Teeth’ to Ricky.

Never judge a book by its cover. Will I ever learn?

PREAMBLE :-

Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle.

And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south. Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake In the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Zechariah 14:1-5 NKJV

Explanation | The whole of Zecheriah 14 is an especially fearful portion on the Holy Bible. For today though, it reminds me of God’s unstoppable reshaping of the redeemed and of everything else that will benefit the redeemed. This is done at tremendous cost. Quite literally the old goes and in comes the new. No matter what. Some have suggested even through a tactical use of nuclear weapons, or maybe even some other new weapon yet to be released on the global scene. In any event, it’s fearful stuff, you know, both God’s reshaping of the redeemed and the refreshed place that is quite literally made a ‘fit’ for them. Especially when it involves the judgment of others. his si tough stuff, as, in a far, far lesser way, are portions of your life right now. You have to get to grips with this and remember that the athletes of God are made fit for purpose and proclamation when they wrestle with Him. This heavenly coach however, shall make sure you carry some injuries! A [i]limp maybe, or even a [ii]thorn in the side, [iii]previous cowardice, or remembrances of [iv]streaking through the night. God’s ways are not our ways, and we must get to grips with both Him and them.

PERFORMANCE TIPS:

This has to be the only poem in the world that uses the word ‘Alkylbenzene Sulfonate’. I am pretty sure you donlt use this everyday so be sure to practice it! Frankly, I don’t think this poem is for performance. It’s an ugly bunch of flowers for sure.

Hello there, it’s Monday June 18^th another Magnificently wet morning here in London.

This last week I was thinking about | Just Staying in Bed With Jesus

Before I begin though, can I ask you to forward this email on to some of your friends? And you ask them to sign up for it? Go on!

OK Here goes | My main mentor in Jesus was speaking to me just yesterday saying how much he admired church goers, many of which go faithfully to church, week after week, year after year, despite continuing to get substantially little of the worst kind of bread. I agreed. with respect to perseverance, it was verging on the miraculous.

I walked out of yet another church yesterday. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t with great sighs and the back of my hand slapped against my ‘aghast’ forehead, sashaying like some disgusted queen down the centre aisle, but rather, we slipped, slipped, slipped out of the back. Why? Well, the chief reason is I am 52 and refuse to waste another two hours of what precious time I have left allotted me. Why? Well, this was a big church, but the visiting speaker didn’t even bother to try and use the English language correctly (though I bet he was a master with a cricket bat or a golf club) and while using Barak Obama (pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage) as an advocate for fatherhood, he NEVER, and I mean NEVER, opened the Scriptures or referred to them, though to be fair, he did read directly from the book he was writing. Why? Well, the ‘talk’ was inter dispersed with crashing music and quick moving video and a presentation to the 5 a side champion football team sporting their new kit and carrying a golden cup. Wehey! Still, I wasn’t happy. I mean, I went for one purpose…to meet with Jesus. But it seemed Jesus had stayed in bed that Sunday…again. I wish I had. I am beginning to think that Jesus rarely goes to church.

We have a crisis in our churches around the Word of God. Let’s admit it, we all know that 99.999% of people go to church primarily to meet with their friends. NOT GOD. Look, I have seen it! The Pastor might declare himself a rampant homosexual who is leaving his lover to marry his dog, and the church, well, the church would still go on! Why? Because if it’s the place where I go to meet my friends and if they are still going….then I will go. No matter what. First point. We have stopped going to church to meet with God. Why? Because the communicating and convicting presence of God is not there anyways and long, long ago, it was replaced with banal talks, wet music, effeminate language and warm coffee and donuts.

We have lost all concept of the magnificence and the absolute necessity of the centrality of the preached word. We have lost all experience of the deep spiritual connection between the prepared preacher, and the unpacking piercing of the word of God. When you receive that, your very spirit rises up like an opened mouthed hatchling ready to receive some real food dropped down its neck. You are moved, your are satisfied, you are convicted, you are in tears, you are humbled before the Most High God, you are truly worshipping ( and don’t me started on that one). When you get that kind of connection, NOTHING ELSE will do. When you don’t get that, you must substitute it with some combination of saccharine sweet and silly songs, so called ‘words’, babbling tongues ordering a ‘Kaliber Shandy’, video, jeans, open necked shirts that aren’t tucked in, and strange, very strange ‘manifestations’.

How do we return to centrality of the preached word? Well it’s not by reform. The present state of our churches are beyond that. The congregations would not want it either. As long as their family and friends are around them…that’s all that matters. They will muddle through and be happy to live an emaciated life. The Father is absent. But their mother church loves them and lets them do whatever they like.

How do we return to centrality of the preached word? It could be by revival…but revival is a long time a coming. Meanwhile we live like a death row murderer waiting for a pardon, and friends, the warden is strapping you in the chair even as I speak. we cannot wait for revival and we are not commanded to do so.

How do we return to centrality of the preached word? It could come from our seminaries, but o, I don’t think it comes from present institutions. I have lost faith in the seminarian machine. It rarely produces prophets, just poor spiritual managers. Very poor.

How do we return to centrality of the preached word? Well, before we die, we need a back to the Bible and a preaching revolution. This must come from new local churches. Yes, this is what we need. New Prophets with the old messages and New Local Churches doing the old things.

If God gives me my desire, I intend to start quite a few before I die. Oh, I know its beyond me. I can’t do it. But who knows, God might do it through me. Who knows, but even now as I type, I want to jack it all in. It’s a magnificent Monday, the first day of our working week, but the spirit of Marvin is bothering me too much today. I wish I could walk away from all of this and still find some happiness. But I couldn’t. My wife knows this. So I am sucking it up, chin up, chest out, pressing on.

The Apples of God’s Eye

PREAMBLE: There is no place for God’s workings in the Corporate Wal Marted Christianity, of the 21^st Century. Yet still God has His methods, His ways and his men that He sends to us in the most unusual of ways. Unfortunately they wouldn’t even get past the Human Resources department of most of our mega churches, nor past the deacon board of many of our smaller one.

This last week I became the living embodiment of snot. Feeling better now though, but never the less, this is a good reason why you are reading this on a Tuesday- it’s catch up time!

This geezer I know had a vision of a man of Macedonia. So off he went. He never found the man, but did come across a woman called Lydia who was instrumental in opening up some doors. Same geezer was also seen seemingly bumbling this way and that, claiming that God had blocked the way and hence the change in direction. Yeah, right! Sometimes I wonder if either a) God is not very clear about giving directions b) He gives a general command to go and expects us to do so, and the rest will work itself out one way or another, or c) mostly, we haven’t got much of a clue, but make the best choices we can…….Seems a funny way to run a ship if you ask me. And talking about ships, this same bloke was ‘commanded’ to sail on the Phoenician Titanic. I think God needs a better travel agent! Anyhoo….he just about survived..lost everything, again, and then got snake bite. Eventually he stopped writing his letters and died…..sometime, somewhere…no one really knows. However, I understand, none of the churches he planted exist today..which just goes to show….I mean you must ask the question…was God actually with the bloke?

Anyways, I stuck a Poem from “366 Poems for Pilgrims” (I think that’s what I might rename the book….It’s a bit retro in a Puritanical kind of way) and I hope it makes you think…meanwhile…

Our Blood Washed Streets

PREAMBLE :-

“And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices.* Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the* seven Spirits of God. Before the throne there was* a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy,* Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!" Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: "You are worthy, O Lord,* To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist* and were created."

This hymn is another attempt to put some testosterone back into our approach to God, and our approach to God is very, very important. If I see another gelding with his hands in his pocket trying to praise the King of Kings I might just walk over and ‘give him a slap’.

The greatness of our God in all His goodness, love and power, MUST be seen, embraced and understood. It is only a BIG God which can make us big enough to be above all of our problems and beyond the turning reach of the enemy. We must have Jesus in His rightful place of being Lord over all. You can pet a pussy cat but I wouldn’t try doing that with a lion!

Hello there, it’s Monday May 21ST

I wasn’t preaching yesterday, so we trotted along to a nearby church until the vision in my own heart gets underway – where a young man, not long into shaving, ‘preached’ the message. Apart from it being Biblically incorrect, psychologically suspect and following the same old fifty year old Pentecostal form it was OK. No, I am lying. it was rubbish. Trite rubbish. Old rice taken out the back of bins behind Asda, shipped off to Africa in the name of Jesus and thrown out the back of an old army truck to starving people who thought it was Christmas. Yet another ‘answer’ to our generation, failing to come up with the goods. We came home hungry. Thank God for the internet.

It was Saturday morning at a Men’s Breakfast where I told him not to join the ministry. “Go and get yourself a proper job” I said, “Go and be happy and whatever you do, don’t come anywhere near this stuff. It’s the worst job in the world.” He was shocked on two fronts. First because it was the first time anyone had ever told him that. Second because he knew I meant it. And I do.

I do what I do, because I can do no other. Oh don’t get me wrong, I can project manage, troubleshoot problems, get by in IT support…yes I can do a whole bunch of other profitable stuff, but equally I can put all of those things down and walk away from it forever. The necessity to preach the Bible however, is something I cannot put down. I am Jeremiah.

I am concerned that as the church in the UK become increasingly feminised and gay, that the kind of preacher required in the near future, will in effect reflect the same content of the congregation of gay girls. we are not far from it now. And now I have taken the pin out of the grenade, I will leave that one with you.

I wrote the poem below, oooh, about 16 years ago. We need some hard men in the pulpit. Men who have been through various valleys with God, men who carry looking glasses and have been to the tops of the delectable mountains.

Someone said to me recently, “You talk like you’re the CEO of a mid range company.” I will be. But for now, it’s me Bridget and the cat. and the cat, as I have told you, is bloody useless! Even so we press on. Either God is bigger than my dreams and desires or He is not worth the following. Either He cares more about my nation and His church, than me, or He should be thoroughly ashamed of Himself for giving a command to go and make disciples and not backing it up. Either God can do more than we can ever ask or think through the most insignificant of people( that’s me) or He has been telling porky pies.

Badged and Blazoned

PREAMBLE: I am of the firm belief that no one should be let near a Seminary until they are at least thirty years of age, and certainly shouldn’t be allowed near a pulpit until they were at least thirty five. Our religious industry, especially in the United States Of America churns out degreed ministers better than the Ford Motor Company. Our churches love it and usually trade in for a newer model every couple or three years. Our older churches always seek newer models with a bigger bust line. They are young and virgin like, pure and pliable and of course very responsive to the older guy with money. HUMBUG!

Young men are simply that, young. They have no scars, little real experience, and no real taste of the battle as experienced by most of their congregation.

When I wrote this poem the young preacher has stepped into the pulpit once more. Nice teeth, smart haircut, exceptionally qualified and as useful to me as a Chocolate fireguard or an ash tray on a motorbike. Lord help us!

If you are reading this, under thirty and thinking of going into the ministry, forget it! Go and get yourself a proper job and come back in a few years. Some would say, not me of course, that Seminaries are only after your money anyway!

As a ministry, we are wrestling through some real challenges as the moment, getting the real Bible out to Real people is still at the Core of what we are doing and are about. I hope you manage to check out Sundays Sermon on the link below.

Someone asked me the other day, if I was happy. I said, “No. And actually, I have not been happy for a good while now. Life’s tough and you just get on with it. In addition to this, knowing the Word of God a little and judging what is happening in our church and nation, you would have to be on a very heavy dose of drugs to come anywhere near….happy.” And just in case you think I am gonna say I have joy….well no, not really. However, the fruit of the Spirit is joy…hmmm…I suppose I must have it somewhere then!

Recently, I have been challenged by our lack of honesty as Christians, as leaders, as ministers of the soul. Unfortunately such a lack of honesty about the tough places of our sojourn has led to a great increase in plastic-ness. Dishonesty doesn’t just spread, you see, it caps rotting teeth, it’s as shallow and as real as an Essex girl on a Saturday night. They look good, but they ‘aint real! THANKFULLY this pesky Puritans left ton of lemons to go and suck on and you know, with all that vitamin C, you get to feel more human by the minute. Hurrah for the Puritans!

Some Songs Too Sing At The Gates of Hell

PREAMBLE :- Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV

Explanation | I don’t want dress distress up in fine clothing. I don’t want to put a smelly monkey in a pinafore and call it nice and cute. No, the problems we go through are profoundly personal and desperately hurtful. Yet, I have observed moments of madness amongst it all. Yes, sometimes, there are such breaks in the midnight clouds that smiles are seen in the darkness and laughter is heard from the terminal cancer ward, the forgotten prison cell, the box of the wrongly accused, the unmercifully maligned, and even those caught with their hand in the till, or down someone else’s knickers! No, I don’t want to dress distress up in fine clothing, but sometimes, amidst it all, there is a found relief, an injection of something from another world, another time yet to come, which, though mad to be found in the moments of distressful madness, are there to strengthen the soul and even the body for the next few necessary steps. And I am not talking about defiance here, or abandonment to fate, but something solid and profound, a certain hope which brings solace, comfort and the power to press on, even when we are slowly perambulating past the poisonous parapets of the gates of hell.

It seems that a song in the night, a song of salvation, is something to ask for and expect. Sing out friends, sing out.

PERFORMANCE TIPS: This piece needs a lot of breath to begin, indeed, the first nine lines should be one literal breathed out flow. The main stopping point, with a major question regarding the seeming perceptive elongation of time is the ‘mad smile’ of Jesus amidst the agony now and yet to come. That’s the key really to this piece, you know, the expectation of the shining of a future happiness, both eternal and infinite, which can make present pressures bearable. This is an invitation for all who suffer to seek some songs to sing and find some strength therein. Ooh and one more thing, ‘Flashes of the laughter’ needs to be said really quickly!

Magnificent Mondays - April 23rd

Hello there, it’s Monday April 23^rd it’s a bit late in the day but I made it!

Terrible weekend. Bridget had back pain a week ago, which on Friday got to excruciating proportions. A rash followed on Saturday and a very painful and sleepless night. I took her to Accident & Emergency on Sunday AM where she was seen by three separate doctors, had blood tests and 2 sets of x-rays including dye. She was sent home undiagnosed and with painkillers and a ‘keep an eye on it’. She wanted to die on Sunday night, so rang again this morning and A&E said go to your GP. So we drove over an hour and was seen by two more Doctors. Oh the rash…..Shingles. How could 3 blooming A&E doctors miss that! (I diagnosed that myself on Sunday night using internet quackery and pictures….plonkas!) So anyways, at least we know what it is and I am hoping we have just squeezed into the 72 hours between the rash appearing and the effective use of anti-virals to somewhat minimize the impact of pain over the next three months. We shall see. Poor Bridget.

Lots of pressure on for sure

So much so that getting to Wednesday Broadcast has been a challenge! Still, I think we are over that hurdle now, but I would so much appreciate your prayers

Hello there, it’s Monday April 16^th and good to be speaking with you once again!

The last few weeks have been mental busy, but it’s time to give you a quick update as well as some vital prayer requests.

We are still in process of moving ‘North’ to become a physical part of the Groundbreakers crew. However, it’s all about finding a place to live and timing. We are of course setting some dates before God and currently are looking at a May 28^th move….We shall see! Of course. Fortunately, where we are living we can get away with giving even a week’s notice if needs be. Please pray with us about this. Thanks.

I am SLOWLY making progress with the organising and setting up of the ‘The 66 Books Trust’ which will become the main vehicle to which most WhisperingWord projects will now be attached. (www.trust66.tv). if anyone can give me a hand with the setting up of this, it would ease my burden for sure! There does not appear to be enough hours in the day at the moment.

We are just about over our Virus and but along with an increase in work, it has meant we have not had the time to produce our Wednesday Radio show. So, all we have for you for now is the Sunday Sermon Broadcast, to which I attach some archive links below.

Hello there, it’s Monday March 26^th and good to be speaking with you

About a week ago I accepted an invitation to be part of Groundbreakers, (www.groundbreakers.tv) taking care of ‘Spiritual Formation’. Of course this ties in remarkably well with what I am doing at the 66 Books Trust. What’s that?

Well, Whisperingword, 66 Weeks, 66 Cities, and all the other Bible related projects and writing I am involved in, need to be more centralised and so I am setting up ‘The 66 Books Trust’ which will become the main vehicle to which all these projects will be attached. (www.trust66.com) This is going to take a wee while, but I just wanted to let you know where we were going with this.

We’ve been pol-axed the last ten days. We picked up THE virus that’s going around and BAM we were down and out. Bridget’s FLU jab I reckon took some of the heat out of the beating for her but being a man, mine morphed very quickly into man flu, which is scientifically proven to be far worse than any woman can imagine. We are still feeling pretty blah. Me more so however, so do pray for me more than you would for Bridget. Thanks….. J

OK - So, dear freinds, the reason I am late this week is I have just arrived back from visits to Glasgow and Aberdeen. Man that a long drive all in one! I am flying next time. It was great to be hosted by Destiny Aberdeen and I will put the sermon on the Radio show this Wednesday so do tune in.

We are moving location on February 24^th, that this Friday. We are moving to Chingford, literally just at the bottom of the M11 - 42 The Bramblings, London E4 6LU - I suppose we are now East Enders? If anyone is around this Friday to help us move and unload- the help would be really appreciated!

Of course Bridget’s present wee job is now defunct and she needs some openings up in the Smoke. Your prayers about this would be greatly appreciated folks.

Health wise – I am still here – though my ABS are getting worse. I think this is directly proportional to Scotch pies and Aberdeen pastries! Again though – years of chronic pain is starting to get on my bits – I would love some healing here that’s for sure!

See my Full 66 City Tour List by Clicking HERE So anyway, after writing and studying in the morning of yesterday, O drove down to 1066 country just north of Battle, to St John's Cross (Robertsbridge) and got the car tattooed. Dave of Millbrook Print and Design did a great Job in putting on the Tatts! The printing of these transfers took about 20 minutes each but putting them on was a job and a half. Indeed, just as Dave was putting the Big Tattoo on the Bonnet a fly flew under the thing, I mean one so big that you could never smooth it out. So, out came the heat gun, off came the Tattoo and another one was printed to replace it. No flys this time! The PA system arrived yesterday and it works, though there is a hum on the thing when its turned on and the Mics hiss. Does this matter for the open air? I don't think so. Two Mics (sounds like the beginning of an awful joke) as well, so one for back up and for discussion. Wesley, "eat your heart out!" So anyway, its off to St Paul's Cathedral ( No I'm not preaching and yes - I did ask!) for the 11:00 am service (it's a ticketed affair so thanks to Roy for getting hold of the tickets) to commemorate 911. After this, my mate Mark will be accompanying me to the Tower where we shall pray and then I will probably preach along the side of the River Thames. I don't have permission from the Queen to do this, but hopefully I won't get arrested.

I was reading Spurgeon this morning where commenting on Mark 3:13 "And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him." (KJV) he says:

Here was sovereignty. Impatient spirits may fret and fume, because they are not called to the highest places in the ministry; but reader be it thine to rejoice that Jesus calleth whom He wills. If He shall leave me to be a doorkeeper in His house, I will cheerfully bless Him for His grace in permitting me to do anything in His service. The call of Christ's servants comes from above. Jesus stands on the mountain, evermore above the world in holiness, earnestness, love and power. Those whom He calls must go up the mountain to Him, they must seek to rise to His level by living in constant communion with Him. They may not be able to mount to classic honours, or attain scholastic eminence, but they must like Moses go up into the mount of God and have familiar intercourse with the unseen God, or they will never be fitted to proclaim the gospel of peace. Jesus went apart to hold high fellowship with the Father, and we must enter into the same divine companionship if we would bless our fellowmen. No wonder that the apostles were clothed with power when they came down fresh from the mountain where Jesus was. This morning we must endeavour to ascend the mount of communion, that there we may be ordained to the lifework for which we are set apart. Let us not see the face of man to-day till we have seen Jesus. Time spent with Him is laid out at blessed interest. We too shall cast out devils and work wonders if we go down into the world girded with that divine energy which Christ alone can give. It is of no use going to the Lord's battle till we are armed with heavenly weapons. We must see Jesus, this is essential. At the mercy-seat we will linger till He shall manifest Himself unto us as He doth not unto the world, and until we can truthfully say, "We were with Him in the Holy Mount."

It's all old fashioned stuff, but its dead on! Spurgeon had his problems, you know, criticism from others (in the end his wife would not let him open letters sent to him) gout (my abs are killing me more than usual) depression (I am a true Celt - 'nuff said ) disasters in the past (Spurgeon had to endure the death of several people as they got crushed in one of his meetings to save souls) and in the end, the general opinion of his biographers is that "The church killed him" and for sure, it can do that to you if you let it. I am no Spurgeon nor Wesley, but I do have breathe, I do have a calling and I am above ground at the moment and you know, the Great Commission still stands. IF THE WORLD WONT COME INTO OUR CHURCHES (good grief some of YOU wont even go into our churches) then we need to take the Scriptures and the Everlasting Gospel into the world. (Now there's a novel idea) So look you, I was hoping for a bit of a send off from the church at the beginning of this tour, I was hoping for a bit of interest from the church, but after 90,000 emails, press releases, radio broadcasts, vision casting, telephone calls, blogs, videos, and you name it, there is me and my mate Mark praying in London and preaching by the Tower. Humanly speaking it is a most inauspicious beginning. BUT FRIENDS....IT IS A BEGINNING! And I am so thankful to have this opportunity. So today then, I leave for Pullborough at around 8:00am where I will be leading a men's conference for Findon Valley Free Church. I was reading Spurgeon's morning devotions just now and it says this | "I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not."— Jeremiah 33:3 . Spurgeon says " There are different translations of these words. One version renders it, "I will shew thee great and fortified things." Another, "Great and reserved things." Now, there are reserved and special things in Christian experience: all the developments of spiritual life are not alike easy of attainment. There are the common frames and feelings of repentance, and faith, and joy, and hope, which are enjoyed by the entire family; but there is an upper realm of rapture, of communion, and conscious union with Christ, which is far from being the common dwelling-place of believers. We have not all the high privilege of John, to lean upon Jesus' bosom; nor of Paul, to be caught up into the third heaven. There are heights in experimental knowledge of the things of God which the eagle's eye of acumen and philosophic thought hath never seen: God alone can bear us there; but the chariot in which He takes us up, and the fiery steeds with which that chariot is dragged, are prevailing prayers.

Prevailing prayer is victorious over the God of mercy, "By his strength he had power with God: yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto Him: he found Him in Beth-el, and there He spake with us."
Prevailing prayer takes the Christian to Carmel, and enables him to cover heaven with clouds of blessing, and earth with floods of mercy.
Prevailing prayer bears the Christian aloft to Pisgah, and shows him the inheritance reserved; it elevates us to Tabor and transfigures us, till in the likeness of his Lord, as He is, so are we also in this world.

If you would reach to something higher than ordinary grovelling experience, look to the Rock that is higher than you, and gaze with the eye of faith through the window of importunate prayer. When you open the window on your side, it will not be bolted on the other." Now it's old fashioned language of course. Most of the Biblical references are unknown to 99% of Christians today, ( help me redress this) but never the less, like you no doubt, I want out of my ordinary and grovelling experience ( isn't that a great picture). Faith Will Find A Way

"And when they could not come nigh unto Him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay."

I was struck by Spurgeon's Morning thoughts and wanted to share them!

Faith is full of inventions.

The house was full, a crowd blocked up the door, but faith found a way of getting at the Lord and placing the palsied man before Him.

If we cannot get sinners where Jesus is by ordinary methods we must use extraordinary ones.

It seems, according to Luke 5:19, that a tiling had to be removed, which would make dust and cause a measure of danger to those below, but where the case is very urgent we must not mind running some risks and shocking some proprieties.

Jesus was there to heal, and therefore fall what might, faith ventured all so that her poor paralyzed charge might have his sins forgiven.O that we had more daring faith among us!

Cannot we, dear reader, seek it this morning for ourselves and for our fellow-workers, and will we not try to-day to perform some gallant act for the love of souls and the glory of the Lord.

The world is constantly inventing; genius serves all the purposes of human desire:

cannot faith invent too, and reach by some new means the outcasts who lie perishing around us?

It was the presence of Jesus which excited victorious courage in the four bearers of the palsied man: is not the Lord among us now? Have we seen His face for ourselves this morning? Have we felt His healing power in our own souls?

If so, then through door, through window, or through roof, let us, breaking through all impediments, labour to bring poor souls to Jesus.

All means are good and decorous when faith and love are truly set on winning souls.

If hunger for bread can break through stone walls, surely hunger for souls is not to be hindered in its efforts.

O Lord, make us quick to suggest methods of reaching Thy poor sin-sick ones, and bold to carry them out at all hazards.

I beleive this is what the 66 City Tour is trying to do....can you help me?

I sat on the toilet this morning reading the news on my iPad (it’s a wonderful tool) and I was musing over the fact that the Librarians were rejoicing over the possible toppling of the Tripoli dictator. It seems that even those sedate men and women of books were even happy despite the bombs and bullets destroying their reading material. And while I contemplated the scene, it slowly became obvious that it was in fact the Libyans and not the Librarians that were rejoicing! It was obvious that despite wearing my glasses I need a new prescription. One wrong word paints a very wrong big picture. I must remember that.

So anyway, we are still in the last three weeks of tour preparation and frankly, I have far too much to do. It seems every decision I am having to make at the moment is a big one which has great repercussions. Please pray for me..meanwhile….

Well 20 days to go!

Frankly I am panicking. I have so much to do before then including two preaching engagements, radio prep, two day seminars, and a magazine article for Sorted. Oh yes, and that may include moving house! Mental but necessary as we can no longer afford to live here. Don’t panic! We went to a birthday party last night in Bexley Heath. About 40 people crammed into a downstairs terraced house. It was great. Just like being in an East Enders episode. It made me realise just how comparatively lifeless I have become. NOTE | I am going to party more and spend more time with real people rather than religious people.

Yes I am preaching later today up in Woolwich.

Can't wait! I think I have a tooth issue emerging. Blooming typical. Sigh...

This is England

Well we have not had a great summer so far in England but yesterday the sun was out and so me and the Mrs went out for a long walk. One of my favourite things in all the world is to go walking with my wife and one of her favourite things is going for walks in graveyards.

So anyway…we ended up walking around our local graveyard and I tell you what is what eye opening and it was horrific.

For the first time ever, the way the graveyard was laid out presented a visual panorama depicting the death of a Christian nation for before my astonished eyes were three distinct phases.

Around the church, the central structure of the graveyard, on the hillside from top to bottom were Christian stone crosses. It seemed as though there were a sea of them, all early 20^th Century. They had order, decorum, hope, even certainty. These corpses were in waiting, they were ready for judgement.

To the left all the mid 20^th century graves, not crosses but upright tomb stones, they were sad, not disdainful, but almost hopeless. Respectable but quiet. Sad. They were not waiting for anything. Just decay.

Then to the right late twentieth and early 21^st century graves. Oh my goodness!!! They were gaudy, I mean to the point of being bizarre, full of highly coloured rocks that lit up at night, windmills, gardening tools, plastic flowers, gnomes (GNOMES!) teddy bears in plastic bags, helium filled balloons, Christmas cards, birthday cards, gravestones etched with racing cars and eerie pictures of the dead. They were nothing but pagan, shallow graves of the worst kind, full of lies. I don’t know what shocked me most, whether it was the neatly placed can of an opened Stella Artois at the head of a young man’s grave, or the many bouquets of fresh flowers, birthday cards, teddy bears, windmills and helium filled party balloons all hanging of the grave of a baby who would now be 1 years of age if it had lived.

This is hopeless. This is sad. This is paganism. This is England.

MOVING MOUNTAINS INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA! | It was the 'thought' movement which sprang up after the great depression that tried to investigate how people could prosper financially, materially, bodily and mentally. Frankly I think it was a great and fascinating exercise and of course today, accounts for much of what we see today in the approach to the aquisition of wealth. I have no problem with this believe it or not, because as someone has said, money is the only thing that God compares Himself with, therefore money is very powerful. Matthew 6:24 | "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. NKJV

NAPOLEON HILL DALE CARNEGIE ET AL | Frankly, I enjoy reading these fella's and Dale Carnegie has some excellent stuff to say. If I can distill all they say into one paragraph it would be this "Acknowledging the seeming mystical connection between belief and the response of 'the universe' to that belief (this will eventually be explained by science) a believing heart, leads to a reprogrammed mind, which leads to clear stating of goals, which leads to both the conscious and sub conscious pursuance of those goals to such an extent that through very hard work and pursuance, they will be achieved. So, chin up, chest out, smile and move into your destiny." I like that. No honestly, I do. There is some factual truth in it...... some....

LEAVING OUT THE BATTLE | And this is where it all falls down. You see the Bible reveals that we are in the midst of cosmic conflict. The universe is a war zone. Light and darkness do battle daily with weapons of truth, obedience, love and sacrifice, the word if which fail to convey the power of active wielding. In this then, the Bible reveals that the active Christian is resisted, is thwarted, is blocked, is blasted, is belittled, is killed in even trying to fulfill the call of the Master. This is what the Bible reveals.

LIVING HAPPILY | Never the less, we can and should live joyfully in the conflict, as we consistently pursue our callings and destinies with all our mind and heart. THIS is the challenge of the Christian warrior, not the avoidance of conflict, but joy in the battle. This is a good way to live. this is God's way to live. In this, we are more than conquerors, through Christ who loved us and gave Himself for us. SO BECAUSE OF CHRIST | BE HAPPY | PURSUE YOUR CALLING | OBEY THE COMMAND | SEE THE VICTORY | REJOICE | DO YOU SEE THE GLASS SHARDS IN THE PORRIDGE?

LIVING IN THE TOILET! | It always makes me giggle when Christians say they are living in the Overflow- I imagine a little mouse with its nest at the back of some pipes underneath the porcelain plate that holds the ever filling cistern. However on Friday I had the great opportunity to go to the JABULA conference in Dunstable. It was fantastic!

Unfortunatly I could only stay a few hours but had the opportunity to speak to some business people and then be allowed to address the conference about the 66 City Tour. I was then prayed for by some very powerful African brothers. You know, as a pasty little white boy, I love being amongst my African brothers..even if they are form Birmingham! :) What a welcome, what a privelage.

REJOICING IN DUNSTABLE | The high point for me there was to listen to the Word of God being preached. I tell you, my Pentecostal Brethren have got it going on when it comes to good solid Bible Teaching. I am sorry that I cannot tell you the name of the brother I heard ( He was from Joberg South Africa) speaking on Nehemiah. I was THE BEST message I have ever heard on Nehemiah and frankly, one of the best messages I have heard in the last ten years. It was cutting, it was as sharp as you could imagine. It was thorough, it was thoughtful, it was accurate, it was dangerous, it was true, it was awesome.

You are gonna miss the Jabula Conference this year. But if you can make it next year, you will not be disappointed. I had a great time and wish I could have stayed much longer!

BRING ME MY PASSION TROUSERS | What the remaining reformed conservative Evangelicals do well in this country is surgically dissect the Scriptures. I mean, we put the frog on the examination table and we go for it! We take the passage and slice and dice it, dissect it and vivisect it, in what we consider to be expositional preaching. But my goodness, we are far too good at doing this without passion and when we expose the content and meaning of the inner workings of a passage of Scripture without passion, we become merely cerebral. In other words, such preaching becomes nothing but a cerebral exercises. WHERE ARE THE TEARS TODAY. Where are the pleadings and the pleasures of expositional preaching? You know friends, as a great preacher once said to me so I say to you, "Give them something to think about, give them something to feel and give them something to do." So true. BUT THIS MUST COME THROUGH A MAN ON FIRE WITH PASSION. Cerebral proclamation will never lead to CELEBRATION OF THE SOUL. In light of this "Wife! Bring me me Passion Trousers!"
